Brief
Red Bull needed content that would appeal to motorsports fans and build overall positive sentiment towards the brand in SA. This needed to involve their F1 driver, David Coulthard, while he was down in South Africa for the Red Bull Showrun. The secondary goal of the brief was to build hype and raise awareness of the Red Bull Showrun itself.
Concept
We tapped into the buzz surrounding the potential return of F1 to South African so il and created a fictional scenario in which David Coulthard airlifted his RB7 F1 car over Johannesburg via helicopter and “broke into” Kyalami for one hot lap; a track that hasn’t seen an F1 race since 1993. But here’s the twist; it wasn’t just CGI. We actually flew the car beneath a DHL helicopter in Johannesburgto the racetrack. Chaos, action, and a surprise cameo ensued.
Results
The positive sentiment was overwhelming. Our film successfully positioned Red Bull as the “unofficial” ambassador of “getting F1 back to SA”, a massive “unofficial” feather in the brand’s cap. Even Sports Minister Gayton McKensie showed up, and used the shoot as an opportunity to announce that he is officially working on a bid to get F1 back to South Africa. Content from our shoot was used across various publications whenever the subject of “F1 returns to SA” was mentioned.
